# 10 Tips for Better Websites

**Are your pages long**? Do they contain a lot of text? Or, do they feel disorganized and boring? If a page looks too compact, it risks not being read at all. Below are ten concrete ways to make your webpage more straightforward, organized, and readable.

1. **Less text**. Write specifically on a topic; don’t write a book.
2. **Short paragraphs**. Break your text into paragraphs often to avoid large blocks of text that easily scare away visitors.
3. **Short sentences**. Short sentences are easier to read and are well-suited for the web.
4. **Lists**. Well-formatted lists make your page airier and the information easier to overview.
5. **Tables**. Tables are a great way to reduce the number of words and make it easier to see connections and relationships.
6. **Images**. Images can be used to lighten up the page and share information.
7. **Use examples**. Everyone likes examples; they are often very good as compliments and generally appreciated by readers.
8. **Headings and subheadings**. Good headings and subheadings help readers get an overview of the content on the page. Subheadings also create some space on the page, making it appear less compact.
9. **Table of contents**. Creating a table of contents from the page headings is a good way to give readers an overview of longer pages.
10. **Let the text breathe**. Active white space makes your page feel airier and can visually delineate parts and create structure without using lines or other graphics.

Good luck with your writing!
