Republic / Design / User Interface Design

An interface is a tool for managing a system. The earliest interfaces consisted of a green flashing cursor on the screen, where the user was expected to enter a suitable command.

Fast-forward to the present, we have graphical interfaces that allow us to scroll, zoom, swipe and interact with the system via easy fingertip movements.

In the future? No one knows, but a lot of people seem to think that voice is the next big step. It might very well be so, but the world is not convinced just yet…

But, no matter how good looking and how clever the technical solutions you can build today are the basic principle remains: to allow the user to perform their tasks with the least possible resistance. Whether that is to find the opening hours for a store or decide where a container of clothing should be placed.

We have created interfaces and icons for complex systems with hundreds of icons, such as

  • Logica’s portals Raindance and Customer accounts,
  • designed interface for SonyEricsson’s in-store touchscreen kiosks campaigns, and
  • built a system that allows KappAhl to optimize its container handling at the load center.

Interface Design for the Web

Today, there is a completely different requirement for a web-based interface compared to just a few years ago. Nowadays, the web is used on phones and tablets just as often as on traditional computers. We have been building web interfaces since the Stone Age of the Web, and have been working with touch screens ever since they first appeared on the market.

Touchscreen Interface Design

Touchscreens got their big break with the launch of the iPhone and similar smartphones, although the technology itself is considerably older. There are many different types of screens and technologies behind them, and all have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to viewing angle, brightness and how to interact with them.

Case Study: Design of Touchscreen Interface for Fire Trucks

Autokaross in Floby builds customized rescue vehicles equipped with the latest technology. Vehicles used by satisfied customers throughout the Nordic region. Republic, together with electronics experts Martinsson Elektronik, has developed a modern control panel with touchscreen technology to control things in a fire truck such as pump motor, water supply, extra lighting, etc.
