Craft CMS + Laravel
After spending a couple of days in Lisbon for the official Craft CMS conference, Dot All, there are a lot of interesting things to discuss. However, the most exciting news is that Craft CMS will be built on Laravel in 2026, which we hope will make Craft more popular in Sweden.
They say that traveling provides new perspectives, and the first thing I realized after a couple of days in Lisbon is that Craft CMS is significantly bigger in other countries than in Sweden. This is something we would like to help change, so here’s a report from Lisbon with some exciting news for the Swedish market.
Just take a look at our neighboring country, Norway, where Craft is a highly appreciated platform that inspires trust and is valued among both businesses and the public sector. When you look at Craft's website, you see companies like IKEA, Netflix, Adidas, and Volkswagen among the references.
This is something we at Republic already knew, but seeing how many great, innovative, and engaging solutions are being built on Craft CMS around the world makes it feel like we’re lagging in Sweden. Don’t get me wrong; of course, there are many other good alternatives as well, but the feeling is that we in Sweden are stuck in old ruts while other countries are taking new paths.
We saw interesting examples from large companies like Vodafone in England and Interflora in Norway, classic clothing brands and fashion from Italy, as well as a variety of public service and culture from the Netherlands, to mention just a few of the presentations.
Pixel & Tonic, the team behind Craft, is now a larger player than before and is doing well financially, which is nice to hear as it guarantees continued good support and new development at the same solid pace (or perhaps even faster) as so far.
The second point, and the biggest news, which also allows us to spark a bit more interest in Sweden for Craft CMS and Craft Commerce, is that starting from version 6, the underlying framework will switch to Laravel.
Craft CMS and Craft Commerce will switch to Laravel from version 6 🤩
Exciting! We also think this timing is quite good, as it opens up even greater possibilities since Laravel is one of the world’s most popular development frameworks and is highly appreciated among developers.
We have been using Craft CMS for ten years now, and to paraphrase an Apple presentation, Craft 5 is the best version of Craft yet...
Additionally, Craft 5 will be an LTS version (a version that will be supported significantly longer than other versions), which means we know that the websites and systems running Craft 5 today will thrive for many more years, even as the transition from Yii2 to Laravel takes place. This is a very appreciated decision by Pixel & Tonic in a world where many are going in the opposite direction, as we like to work long-term.
More people in Sweden deserve a truly robust, customizable, and flawless CMS, with accompanying e-commerce if desired.
More people in Sweden deserve a truly robust, customizable, and flawless CMS that adapts to their needs instead of the other way around.
For everyone who wants to build long-term, see a high return on investment over time as the system adapts to your needs instead of the other way around – all while having complete freedom when it comes to design, color, and form. Something we think is fundamental!
Craft CMS can also serve as the engine for apps and other applications if desired.
Most of our clients have been with us for many years, some for up to 15 years, and we value long relationships and building solutions that help you go the distance.
We see a bright future for Craft CMS and Craft Commerce, so if you want to discuss opportunities for you or see references similar to what you want to do, we’d be happy to have a meeting.
PS. Lisbon quickly climbed to my top 5 list of cities; how could I have missed this all these years?
